The Wedding: When Two Souls Unite

The wedding symoblises a lifetime bond. Ours was an arranged marriage and the rituals in our customs starts a few days before the wedding, culminating in the exchange of wedding rings.

It is a very long-drawn-out affair. One month before the wedding on an auspicious day, a small ritual is held after which the wedding card is first sent to the deity. Subsequently, the card is sent to near and dear ones. The bride is then invited by relatives and neighbors to their house to have a lavish spread as she will be leaving her parent’s place after marriage. I still remember those days as I was forced to eat all types of special dishes. I was conscious that I will put on weight. On the wedding day, the bride is massaged with turmeric and takes the first shower with the water that is brought from the deity’s place. After that she is decked up with the bridal finery and brought to the marriage hall.
